Carron

About Carron

An Carn – A heap of stones (to identify a chiefs grave).

Carron in the BurrenCarron village lies in the centre of the Burren overlooking the region’s largest Turlough. It is the only village in the high burren and features the bare necessities of country life – a church, school, pub and restaurant (Cassidy’s – Croí na Boirne).

Birthplace to Michael Cusack, founder of the GAA, whose original homestead has been fully restored and a contemporary visitor centre developed.

Carron is a walkers paradise boasting three nationally recognised walking trails, and a choice of accommodation (B&B, self catering and hostel). Nearby are the Burren Perfumery, the Michael Cusack Centre, Cahercommaun and Caherconnell Stone Forts.

Within five miles of the village are The Burren Perfumery, Caherconnell Stone Fort, Gleann Ciosog (Gaelic Athletic Association pitch for the local football team Michael Cusacks), Poulnabrone dolmen, a Turlough (disappearing lake) and limestone scenery.

"We invite you to join us and get involved in our Burren food story. We are passionate about our food, growing and producing it locally for you to enjoy."

The fertile valleys of the Burren have long been known for their quality food produce. In recent years, this food tradition has expanded through the emergence of many award-winning chef-led restaurants and high quality artisan food producers, as well as an increase in practising market gardeners and growers.

The Burren Food Trail is more than a listing of quality food establishments in the area, it aims to uncover for you the path that your food takes from field to plate. You can decide for yourself how to follow the trail, stop at every point or else dip in and out along the way, according to your taste, interest and location.

Carron Turlough is a Geosite.

'Walk the quiet roads of the Carron Polje – the largest karst depression in northwest Europe. This large hollow can be filled, very quickly, with a seasonal lake (Carron Turlough) when rainfall is high and groundwater wells up through underground springs. As the season dries it can empty just as quickly, as the water drains underground through subterranean channels and swallow holes. Explore the Carron Loop Walking trail over Termon Mountain, with its fantastic views across the Carron Turlough, and visit the historical monuments of Termon Cross, Temple Cronin Medieval Church and St Fachtnan’s Holy Well.'

Additional Information

Poll na mBrón Irish means “hole of the quern stones”. Poulnabrone is a portal tomb dating back to the Neolithic period, between 4200 BC and 2900 BC. Excavations in 1985 found that between 16 and 22 adults and 6 children were buried under the monument. Buried with the dead were personal items that included a polished stone axe, a bone pendant, quartz crystals, weapons and pottery.

Poulnabrone Dolmen is a Geosite.

'Pause for a while at Ireland’s most ancient and iconic archaeological monument. For almost 6,000 years, Poulnabrone portal tomb, built by the local Burren community of that time, has stood proud within this rocky landscape. Look closely at the rocks that surround you and discover the fossils of the marine creatures that lived in the warm, shallow, tropical sea that covered this area approximately 345-326 million years ago - before dinosaurs, flowering plants or man had even evolved.'
