Management & PartnershipsWorking together brings reward for everyoneThe Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark is a wonderful place that needs to sustain lives and livelihoods but it’s also a place that itself needs to be sustained with care and common sense. Local people are embracing that challenge.
Not just a tourism destination
As well as being a world-celebrated destination for visitors, the Burren and Cliffs of Moher region is a vibrant home, a workplace, a community: a living, active place where families are reared; where work is done; where food is produced; where business is transacted; where farmers live off the land; where people explore and learn, and; where fun, culture and entertainment are ingrained in the local DNA.
Local people know we need thriving communities and a way of living that doesn’t harm our environment and culture. The reality is that one can’t exist without the other. We need a protected environment to ensure a prosperous local economy and a rich quality of life for all.
The Geopark organisation is working hard to ensure this happens for the local population. So whether you’re a local community, resident, farmer, business, school or interested group, the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark is your organisation too.
Partnering with local businesses for sustainable tourism
The Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark in partnership with The Burren Ecotourism Network has developed a Code of Practice for Sustainable Tourism to help businesses in our destination to work together for the benefit of their local business, their environment, and the well-being and livelihood of their local community.
Through the GeoparkLIFE project, we established a model for developing the skill base of our community stakeholders in the understanding, management and conservation of the natural and cultural heritage of the Geopark region. We also developed a guideline for working with communities on conservation projects.
The landscape of the Geopark is a mosaic of specialised natural habitats, hosting unique and varied flora and fauna. Through taking a partnership approach involving the management agencies and landowners of the region, we have developed an integrated management approach to ensure the best management of our sites.
We have seen a significant increase in coach tourism in the Geopark in recent years. To understand its impact, we have commissioned a number of studies which can be found here.
